Making a good first impression should be among your first orders of business and that includes how you present your business online. In a very general sense, the purpose of a website’s home page is to compel visitors to venture further into the website, just as a shop window would on a high-street.

Internet users make up their minds about the quality of a website in the blink of an eye. It takes less than two-tenths of a second for an online visitor to form a first opinion of your business once they’ve perused your company’s website, according to researchers at the Missouri University of Science and Technology. And it takes just another 2.6 seconds for that viewer’s eyes to concentrate in a way that reinforces that first impression count. That’s incredibly fast!

 

Of all the pages on your website, the home page has the biggest job to do. In many cases, if the home page fail, so does the website. It is important to remember that a website’s home page has a specific purpose, whether that’s to get people to go through to your online shop, make an enquiry or sign up for a newsletter. It’s important to have a great home page.

 

So what can you do to ensure that first impressions count for your website?

  • Don’t overload the page

Use the homepage to showcase your capabilities and the benefits your business offers clients. A clever layout that is easy on the eye, and not too crammed, makes users want to continue reading. Well-built layouts and good colour schemes are vital to creating a sense of organisation and trust.

  • Use engaging content

Typically people skim over websites only pausing on images and text that draws their attention. An image can say a thousand words and the right image can perfectly sum up your business in one shot. Having powerful content that gives an amazing first impression and shows a meaningful message will inspire and engage audiences across channels.

  • Think about mobile users

As the vast majority of people now use a mobile phone to browse the internet, it is important that a website is mobile friendly. If users like what they se they’ll continue using the site, but typically if the website isn’t mobile responsive then just leave the website.

  • Speed is everything

Every second counts when it comes to first impressions, ensuring user gets what they expect instantly is vital for online growth. With over 47% of us expecting a web page to load under two seconds, and a 57% abandon rate if your page load time is 3 seconds or more, the bar is set high for websites. The goal for any business or website should be to match and exceed expectations, having a well-performed site in this modern era is crucial. Slow performing sites will simply become extinct.

 

If it’s been a while since you last looked at your own website, take the time now to identify the top three things you want visitors to do as a result of visiting your site. Look at the analytics of your website, are people completing these 3 actions? If not it may be time that you reviewed the content on your website to make sure that your business is not missing out on important work. After all, first impressions count!
